Mindy (202).
http://chompand-slurp.blogspot.com

I think that Mindy's food blog is good, as she recorded her meals very clearly and accurately. Her reflection shows the good points and bad points of her diet, and she suggested ways to improve her diet in the future. Her analysis of her diet is also very specific and straight forward. I also think that her modified dish is good, as it is a lot healthier than the original dish.

Yisi (201).
http://healthyeating-healthybody.blogspot.com

Yisi's food blog is detailed, as she commented on her food intake on each day that she recorded her meals. She also stated the number of servings that she ate, and what she did to make the meal healthier or less healthy each day. Her reflection is also very good as she has decided to take actions, such as planning her own meals, to have a healthier diet from now on.

Amelia (202).
http://la-nourriture.blogspot.com

Amelia presented her meals in the 3 days very clearly, with the use a tables, and even used pictures to show what she ate. Her analysis is also very detailed and clear, with all the necessary information in it. The reflection she made was also very well-thought, and she even went on to say how her diet would affect her health. Her modified dish is also very creative.

Reflection.

After doing this project, I have realised that the times that I eat my meals are very irregular due to the school timetable and other activities, such as CCA. For example, on 18th February, even though I woke up at 5.40am, I only ate 'breakfast' at 11.30am, as I had overslept in the morning and had no time to eat breakfast. Then I had CCA after school, and the next meal was only at 7pm at night. I also learnt that even though I dislike to eat vegetables, I should still try to eat at least some everyday, so that my body will have enough Calcium.

I think that my eating habits are extremely unhealthy, as I have consumed too much of Sodium, even without realising it until I did the Food Intake Assessment! Also, my calcium intake is very low, and I consume too little food with a high amount of energy everyday. My diet is also not balanced, like the Healthy Diet Pyramid proved.

I think that the suggested nutritional tools, especially the Food Intake Assessment, were very useful. The Food Intake Assessment showed in detail how much Protein, Energy, Fat, etc I consume everyday, and even compared it to the amount that is recommended or required! The only small down side was that it does not have all the data of every food that I ate, and I had to change or omit some of the food items that I consumed.

I think that it is healthy as it does not contain a lot of trans fats and sodium. It also has a reasonable amount of energy, and is suitable for breakfast.

Modification.

The dish that I would like to modify is the pancakes that I ate on 16 Feb 2010, 9.45am. I ate the pancakes with Hotcake Syrup and margarine.

I think that instead of using margarine, we should use butter, as margarine contains more trans fats. Trans fats raise LDL cholesterol, and hence also increases our total cholesterol.

Also, the Hotcake syrup is not good for health. It contains calories and sodium, both which are harmful to our health if consumed too much. Thus, instead of using Hotcake syrup, we could use Maple syrup instead, or even eat the pancakes without syrup! :D

When frying the pancakes, we could also use less oil so that we would consume less oil, which contains fats.

After all the modifications, there would be less trans fats, calories, sodium and fats! (:

Analysis.

According to the Healthy Diet Pyramid, we should have 5-7 servings of Rice&Alternatives, 2 servings each of Fruits and Vegetables and 3 servings of Meat&Alternatives per day, in order to have a healthy and balanced diet.

I have realised that each day, I take about:

-4 servings of Rice&Alternatives.
-1.5 servings of Fruits.
-0 servings of Vegetables.
-3 servings of Meat&Alternatives.

From this, I can tell that I need to try and eat more of the food items in the Rice&Alternatives and Fruits category. For Vegetables, I will have to attempt to eat at least some, instead of not eating any like I do now, as I dislike eating them. For Meat&Alternatives, I eat just the right amount, and I will work towards eating the same amount and not too little or too much of the food items in this category.

I also took the Food Intake Assessment, and here are the results of my nutritional intake compared against RDA:

Energy - 85%
Carbohydrate - 71%
Protein - 101%
Total Fat - 99%
Saturated Fat - 147%
Cholesterol - 121%
Calcium - 75%
Dietary Fibre - 72%
Sodium - 151%

They also showed the total percentage of my energy intake for the 3 days:

Total Carbohydrates: 51% (Recommended: 55-65%)
Total Protein: 15% (Recommended: 10-15%)
Total Fats: 35% (Recommended: 25-30%)

From the results of the Food Intake Assessment, I realised that the amount of Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium that I have consumed is way too much. Thus, I will try to improve my diet by eating less oily food as I have eaten a lot of those in the past few days. Also, I will reduce the amount of eggs that I consume, and eat more bean products to cut down on Cholesterol. In order to consume less Sodium, I will be more conscious about the amount of salt in the food that I consume, as I had no idea that I was eating so much unhealthy food with too much Sodium.

Another observation is that my Carbohydrate, Calcium and Dietary Fibre intake is too low. Thus, I will try my best to eat more fruits every day, and also eat some vegetables to increase my Calcium level. I will also try and get more sunlight, so that my body can make more Vitamin D, which helps our body absorb calcium.

For the percentage of my energy intake, I think it is quite reasonable, but I will still try to reduce the amount of fats I consume.
